Neti Pot -- Cleanse your sinuses naturally

What is a Neti Pot ?

A neti pot is a very simple device that allows the user to flush their sinus cavities with a salt water solution to wash away excess mucus and allergens.

Excess mucus can harbor bacteria and entrap allergens in direct contact with the sensitive sinus membranes. Ancient Yoga Practicioners believed that the nose was an entryway for disease to enter the body.

The practice of Jala Neti or simply nasal irrigation was developed as a way to cleanse the nose and thus wash away bacteria and help maintain better sinus health.

The neti pot is similar to a teapot in that it has a spout, however the neti pot usually has a special end that allows for a water tight seal against the user's nostril.

The user simply leans forward..over a sink if inside...and pours a stream of the salt solution from on side of the nose through the sinuses and then allows the water to exit the other nostril. By keeping the head positioned with the chin down towards the chest the user can face sideways towards the neti pot and form a water tight seal against that nostril.

The process is not uncomfortable and the salt water will not enter the user's throat unless they swallow. It is possible to breathe normally through the mouth while the nostril pot is in use.

The salt water solution is normally mixed so as to match the body's own saline content. This helps prevent discomfort as too much salt -- or too little salt can cause stinging. Commercially available salt mixtures are available and are recommended for the new user.

Advanced users sometimes add capsaicin (pepper) as a way to stimulate mucus flow to ensure a thorough sinus cleaning. Most users will get favorable results by just using the normal salt mixtures available.

It is important to properly drain the nostrils after the procedure. The user can tip the head forward after the flush and then gently exhale through each nostril separately. Keep a tissue handy to catch the excess water .

The neti pot can be a valuable tool in maintaining better sinus health. Allergy sufferers can flush away allergens that have become entrapped in the nasal cavities.
